As an EM, 20% of time spent on project management sounds about right. What you are overlooking is the time spent managing the people on a team. Hiring, recruiting, promotions, coordinating parental leave, working out visas with immigration attorneys, check ins, comp adjustments, etc all take immense time and energy to do properly. It’s a full time job and then some.
