It's concretely different. If the house becomes worthless, the "borrower" can walk away from the contract, owe nothing, and the bank keeps the house. The bank had better consider the value of the house, not just the ability of the "borrowed" to pay, when issuing this contract.

Is the mechanism through which CarPlay/Android Auto works locked down? Could a third party make a competing app for iOS or android that would connect to cars and run on the screen? Or perhaps a special piece of hardware to hook in to older cars?

Third party wireless adapters are available for CarPlay or Android Auto.

I’ve bought a bunch of movies on appletv, and I think about how angry this would make me, but I’ve never looked into a decent backup solution. I’m not sure if the drm has ever been broken really, but I’d imagine some device could pretend to be an hdmi tv. Anyone ever backup their atv stuff?

Others have already backed up bit-for-bit copies on your behalf: you just need to download it from them piece by piece.

Bear in mind that you would likely be infringing on the rights of Apple since US law only permits backups for physical media.
